Solitude musings

Solitude meets Solitude

Solitude meets Solitude

As most of my friends and family know, Monday's and I have never quite seen eye to eye on anything.  It's definitely NOT my favorite day of the week.

Today was different though.

One of my very dearest friends, Meghan Gravatt, of Lake Placid's Solitude Catering, came down to play in the soap studio.    We had so much fun, catching up on life, making plans to take over Whiteface Mtn after opening day and planning to make more soap.  This was her first experience making cold processed soap.  She helped me make a very pretty lavender soap today that is colored with alkanet root and then we made a soap for the guys.  I seriously can't wait to cut this one and see how the swirls look on the inside.  It's scented with Tabacco & Bay Leaf.

Both of the soaps made today will be available on December 21st.

That dirty 4 letter word...

And then, there was snow.

The wood stove has been stoked for several days now and the temps here at Solitude are going to get mighty cold over the next week.   It's time to start thinking about new formulations to help combat super dry winter skin caused by the dry heat of a wood burning stove and subzero windchills.

Our skin is our body's biggest organ and it takes a lot of abuse when the winter weather sets in. So keep an eye out for some new products coming to Solitude Soapworks in the upcoming months.  Lip Balms, thick hand & body cream and perhaps, even some beard oil for the bearded ones in your life.

October in the High Peaks

The weather here at Solitude can be downright quirky.  I would swear on a stack of bibles that we have our own micro-climate here and as the old saying goes, if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes.

Last year, we had numerous days during October where the temps broke 80F, it was downright hot.  This past weekend, we had a Nor'Easter which left us with snow, sleet, freezing rain and FOG.  It was the perfect weather to stay indoors, pick out 2 or 3 fragrance oils, and allow the creative juices to start flowing.

Marzipan and Grand Marnier Souffle were the end result.  Both will be cut in the next day and will be available by December 2nd.
